'Shift gun sights and hero becomes demon'
Bill Ethell <billeth@infoxchange.net.au>
The following letter was published in 'The Australian' newspaper <http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/>
on 11 April
2002 under the title 'Shift gun sights and hero becomes demon'.
On September 11 nearly sixty years ago, a group of young men set out on an
impossible mission to destroy a great and important symbol (the battleship
Tirpitz) of a seemingly all-powerful enemy; six of them died and six were
captured after successfully bombing their target.
One of the survivors, 22 years later had become the leader of a special
military training camp for 15-year-old boys, which I attended. He was a
remote, austere man. I would gaze in awe at his bowed head as he led us in
prayer, kneeling beneath a 6 metre high poem extolling the virtues of
manhood, painted on a bare brick wall. I moved on to other, more specialised
training camps, one of which had the motto, 'O Sweet it is and fitting too, to
die for one's country'.
Our leader was Captain Place, Victoria Cross, Royal Navy who put that German
Battleship out of action. Boy First Class Cornwall, who at 16 was the
youngest recipient of this supreme award for valour in the face of the
enemy, was constantly remembered as an example to emulate.
Two other Victoria Cross graduates of our training camp were Leading Seaman
Magennis from Belfast, who also placed bombs under a symbol of enemy might
and Able Seamen McKenzie, awarded the Victoria Cross during the raid on the
seemingly impenetrable fortress of Zeebrugge in 1918.
All of these heroes
were volunteers who fought on a side that killed innocents indiscriminately.
The sooner we stop demonising so called suicide bombers, the better we will
understand the reasons for their acts of courage and sacrifice. The sooner
we start to look at the world through their eyes, the quicker we will accept
the need to change the world they live in - a world where the supreme act of
sacrifice is their only way to inflict damage on an enemy they believe is
intent on destroying their very reason for living.

Taff Monks
Jack Martin <rjmartin45@cox.net>
Hello there,
My name is Jack Martin Ex RSM Royal Artillery. I live in the USA Virginia. The reason I am emailing you is out of curiosity.
My wife and I were antiquing in Norfolk, Virginia when we came across a sailors hat with HMS Ganges on it. It had a name inside which said
Taff Monks, with a possible year of 1970 but that was not very clear. I felt a little concerned that this hat or whatever you call them in
the Navy would end up in an antique shop in Viginia, Sad. I have checked the internet to no avail. If I thought this hat meant something to
someone I would possibly buy it. Can you help or advise on what I should do. As a matter of course my son spent 28 years in the Royal Navy,
He lives in North Wales, his name is Richard Charles Martin. The last ship I seem to remember him on was the HMS Manchester, rank PO or CPO.
I do hope this email is not a waste of your time.
Regards
Jack Martin

HMS Londonderry 1967 - 71
Spider Kelly <educated65@hotmail.com>
I am hoping to get together as many as possible of the ships company, from the start of the refit in 1967,
through to about the middle of 1971. Most of us that joined in the early days, went through the
whole 4 years, so you did get to know each other pretty well as you may well
imagine.

I'm the Features Editor at Central TV News. We want to mark the various
anniversaries of the Falklands war over the next few weeks by interviewing

are the Midlands contact for the association. Do you know of anyone I could
contact? I'm specifically looking for people from and/or living in the East
Midlands.
If you can help me, please call me on 0115-964 5242 or 07776-227552.
Many thanks for your time,

Ian Smith <isgs2001@yahoo.com>
My name is Ian Smith, and I served with the Royal
Army Dental Corps in the 60's and 70's
I had been trying to get in touch with old
colleagues, but none of the
existing Ex Service Sites were able to help me to do
this.
As a result I have opened a website
www.comrades-in-arms-reunited.com to
help other ex service personnel to contact each
other.
Early responses are very good, and there is
obviously a demand that has
not as yet been fulfilled by the existing sites.
I have contacted you because I believe you are in a
position to be able to
help 'spread the word'.
If you could see your way to include a link to my site, which I will happily reciprocate
I would be most grateful.
Registration is free, searching is free, and email
addresses are kept
confidential.
There are spaces to enter every Unit served in,
the dates, and places.
There is also a database to list old service friends
who you have lost touch
with
through the mists of time, and the facility to
enter your 'last sighting'
be it Unit, or Place.
I know this site is working, and supplies an
invaluable service to many
former service men and women.
I hope you will feel able to help.
Yours sincerely
Ian Smith
