The daughter of Boy Signalman David Buchan who after being medically discharged from the RN after a fall aboard his first ship, enlisted in the army and served in Belgium. "Dad was supposed to fight in France. He went over, and was put on parade with other Cameron Highlanders and while they marched some of the ones in the back would pull up their kilts with the bayonet. They had to watch out for pots being swilled out the windows. He went to a movie in Belgium with some friends. It was a silent movie and no one knew what was going on. The men were crying as hard as the women and dad's group started to laugh. The Belgians were horrified and called them "Barbarians". He never got to the front lines, thank God, he got a bad case of pneumonia and after the hospital was sent to guard the German prisoners. Dad was a talker, as I am, and he made friends with his "enemies". They liked him so well they gave him a cigarette ashtray which they had made from a brass shell case".
