OVERVIEW UPDATE No.1

HMS GANGES CENTENARY PARADE

IPSWICH WATERFRONT

Saturday, 23 APRIL 2005

Important information for “Day Trippers”

The Centenary Parade will commence at 12 noon and those taking part in the parade must be in place by 1130. Following the parade the Association will be holding a reception for our invited guests. Admission to the reception will be by ticket.

The cost of catering for the reception is being funded from various sources including members attending reunion, who will have paid an inclusive fee with their reunion booking. The reception will be open to all members of the Association but those members who are not attending reunion will need to contact the Association so that numbers can be recorded for catering purposes. The cost of the reception, for these “Day Trippers,” will be £5 per head which will include a finger buffet lunch, red or white wine, or a soft drink. There will also be a cash bar for those wanting beer.

If any members of the Association, NOT attending reunion, wish to attend the reception, with or without guests, would they please contact Jim Gitsham on

01473 328660

AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE BUT IN ANY EVENT BEFORE 3 APRIL.

DVD Recording

A DVD is being commissioned to record as much as possible of the Parade, the Reception and interviews with Members. It is envisaged that the DVD will be made available between 3 to 4 weeks after the event at a cost of £10 each. Copies will be made available for sale through the Museum and by direct mail from the Chairman. When mailed to UK addresses an additional £1.50 per disk, postage and packing, will be required. P&P costs for other addresses will be calculated at the time. Similarly, the price of video tapes will be calculated when numbers are known.

It would be very helpful if an indication could be given as to the number of disks/tapes required. Obviously, small quantities will cost more to produce than larger batches. Please contact me by: telephone (01702) 341968,  fax (01702) 432440 or, preferably, by email  thipthorpe@btconnect.com to give an indication of future orders. These indications will not be binding but will help us in assessing the likely demand for disks & tapes.

Finally, could I ask Members who receive this Update direct by email, or read it on the Noticeboard, to pass on the information to those Members who are not connected to the Internet or who may not have seen it. It is very important for the “Day Trippers” to contact Jim Gitsham as early as possible.

George McNiff

My husband George McNiff was at Ganges 1969 - 1970, sadly he passed away last September.
I am trying to find anyone who may have knew him at that time, and if so if they have any photos that he may be in that could be copied and sent to me. I am trying to put together a photo album of his naval career. This I hope to pass on to my grandson who is now 2 weeks old. He never got to meet his grandad but I want him to know him. If you knew George, it would be nice to hear from you with any little dits you may have.
Thank you in anticipation
Best regards

Wartime Recollections Research

Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Karen Burnell and I am a postgraduate research student at the University of Southampton. Currently, I am researching the long term impact of war memories throughout the lifespan, and the role that social support plays in reconciling these memories. I am hoping to conduct interviews with formly serving veterans of conflicts ranging from WWII through to the 1st Gulf War.
My reason for contacting you is to ask if you could publicise this study amongst members of your association.
Many people who do this sort of research really enjoy talking about their recollections, and all their personal details will, of course be kept confidential.
My contact details are as follows; please feel free to contact me if you require further information.

Thomas Halloran.

I have discovered a number of photos of HMS Ganges and crew taken by my dad, Thomas Halloran. Dad was in the Royal Navy from 1939-45. We lost dad far too young, he had a fatal heart attack in 1972 aged 52. I know he loved being at sea and was proud to have been a wireless operator. He even taught me morse code when I was 7!
I would love to hear from anyone who knew dad and would be happy to supply copy photos to anyone who would like them.
Best wishes

HMS Ganges off Shotley 1905.

HMS Ganges 1905

H.M.S. Ganges enthusiasts may be interested to note that we have a watercolour of her by

Henry Branston Freer (Exh.1905 - 1915) moored off Shotley on the Orwell, Suffolk.

It is signed and dated 1905, the year the new shore establishment was created and before she was renamed HMS Tenedos III in 1906.

It is a large watercolour presumably done for exhibition and measures approximately 18x27 inches (unframed) 26x35 inches in its frame.

The picture forms part of our January Selected Group of pictures of the East Anglian coast, all of which can be viewed on our website at

http://www.abbottandholder.co.uk/ (click on LIST for link to Selected Groups for images)

The watercolour of HMS Ganges is priced at £2,250.

Please do call if you have any questions or visit us.
