Dear Members.
May I take this opportunity to inform you of an idea reborn.
We here at Beeston Ganges Division, have an initiative we would like to implement.
In view of the fact that our proposal of having the Standard Bearers’ Trophy named the "Peter Smith Trophy", who died so tragically of Motor Neurone Disease, was shelved. It was because the trophy did not belong to the Association. This we were not aware of until the AGM. Anyway, that is now ‘water under the bridge’, so to speak.
We, at Beeston would now like to present a Trophy of our own to the Association. This Trophy would be awarded to the person chosen by Beeston to any member of the Association who is nominated by any Division, or individual, for an outstanding achievement over the year.
Such as battling an illness, for instance, as Pete Smith did with such courage. Or fund-raising for charity. Or achievements in other fields.
This Trophy would then be presented to the winner by Pete’s widow Toni. Or someone she asks to represent her, at the Reunion. It could be done at the same time as the 50/60 certificates are awarded.
The Trophy would consist of a mounted crystal globe, encircled with a band bearing the points of the compass, to denote our world wide Association. Alongside will be a silver sailing craft, depicting Pete’s sailing trip across the Med to the Dalmatian coast, with only one other mate for company. This was done while still suffering from that terrible disease. Finally, a number of shields would be fixed around the plinth to take the names of the recipients each year. We think it will be a fitting tribute to a very courageous ‘Ganges Boy’. We are submitting this letter to all Divisions, the Gazette, and the website. This way, we think we will reach all the members.
Details of the closing date to nominate your choice will be forwarded later on in the year.
