Bill Gutteridge

I was A member of the ships company back in 1951 working as a stores assistant in the clothing store, I used to draw cartoons for the Shotley mag. I just wondered if anyone has any copies of that period. Also if any other member working there at that time remembers me.
Many thanks.

Michael Vance

Sir,
My name is Marshall Vance, My brother Michael Vance served at Ganges in 1968/9. I am trying to find some photographs of him in service. Can you help me with this in any way. Any history or direction where I can look up my brothers service would be helpful. I live in Essex and it is relatively easy for me to travel to Ipswich. His career history is; HMS Ganges, HMS Collinwood, HMS Ark Royal and several other ships, he was a service man for 8 years. Mike has no past photos and it would be nice to try and locate some.
I would be grateful for any help.

Of Shoes and Ships and Sealing Wax of Cabbages and Kings

Gentlemen
Thinking about the web site and the Magazine, I have a couple of items which I am sure will be of interest to some of your browsers/readers. In the former case, it would be better were the browser to have a broadband connection and to have downloaded an Adobe Reader for PDF Files.
Money is always of interest, now, in the future and in the past. I have written a major page on NAVAL PAY AND ALLOWANCES 1950 TO 1985 - 35 years of how much we were paid [or not, depending upon ones views] which covers ALL PERSONNEL, male or female, regulars or national service, QARNNS, VAD's, RM etc. With it comes a social history of what was happening in the Royal Navy vis-á-vis in the country as a whole during this period. Then, some of your 'visitors' will have heard of HERBERT LOTT and the cash awards given to people on merit grounds from the Herbert Lott Naval Trust Fund. Believe it or not, no one has ever bothered to find out who this Herbert Lott was, so I did the research and wrote the very first article on his life and death. The RN are currently processing my web site page with a view to making a formal dedication to his name and memory, the first since 1928 when he gave the first tract of money to start the Fund. In 1947, the year of his death, he bequeathed in his will an amount in excess of £100,000.00. That amount put the Fund on a firm footing and as some people know, the Fund is still operational, paying our prizes to our meritorious young sailors. These pages can be read through my home page which is http://www.godfreydykes.info. If you think it fitting, then please tell your readers about them.
Many thanks.
Best regards.

John George Malcolm

Hello there
I am just wondering if you can help me. My late father JOHN GEORGE MALCOLM went through HMS Ganges in 1941. I wonder if you can tell me were I could get his record of time at HMS Ganges and if possible a class photo of that time. Circa April 41. He survived the sinking of HMS CORNWALL & WW2 after serving on various ships.
Many thanks
D Malcolm

Arthur Ruthven Atkinson, (1896 - 1941)

My mothers father, Arthur Ruthven Atkinson, (1896 - 1941) joined the Navy as a 'Boy Sailor' when he was 12yrs. His service record shows him to have been on HMS Ganges from 4th Jan. 1913 - 13th March 1913. Then from 31st May 1913 - 15th Aug. 1913. Was the gap between March and May a holiday or what? If so my mother would dearly love to know how to find out where he went as she was told that he ran away from home to join up and never returned.
If anyone could shed any light on the possibilities we would be very grateful.
Yours in anticipation,
Margaret East, (grandaughter) <niescout@ntlworld.com>

Tug Wilson

The picture is of Tug Wilson who joined Ganges back in 1952, we all know him as the big Guy getting in the bloody way at reunion in his oversized wheelchair.
Tug needs a new modern wheelchair so we have started an appeal down at RNA Uxbridge to raise enough funds, I have got West London Ganges Division involved and I have written to the National Committee for support and I also intend to reach the Ganges Boys who have not yet come into our modern world of the internet via Dick Lloyd with the Gazette.
His old Chair has seen better days so we have decided to try and look after one of our own and get him an electric made to measure one.
I am Chairman of RNA Uxbridge so I have got the branch to head the appeal as we hold a Charity Bank account, so it will be easier to hold the funds in one place until we have enough to make the purchase. We estimate that the chair will cost in the region of £2k, yet to be confirmed as we are waiting for a company to visit Tug and take his measurements and give us a formal quote
Donations by cheque or money order made out to Uxbridge RNA - Thanks. Postal Address:

Please mark the back of the envelope 'Tug Wilson'
Yours Aye
