OVERVIEW UPDATE No.1
HMS GANGES CENTENARY PARADE
IPSWICH WATERFRONT
Saturday, 23 APRIL 2005
Important information for “Day Trippers”
The Centenary Parade will commence at 12 noon and those taking part in the parade must be in place by 1130. Following the parade the Association will be holding a reception for our invited guests. Admission to the reception will be by ticket.
The cost of catering for the reception is being funded from various sources including members attending reunion, who will have paid an inclusive fee with their reunion booking. The reception will be open to all members of the Association but those members who are not attending reunion will need to contact the Association so that numbers can be recorded for catering purposes. The cost of the reception, for these “Day Trippers,” will be £5 per head which will include a finger buffet lunch, red or white wine, or a soft drink. There will also be a cash bar for those wanting beer.
If any members of the Association,
NOT
attending reunion, wish to attend the reception, with or without guests, would they please contact Jim Gitsham on
01473 328660
AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE BUT IN ANY EVENT BEFORE 3 APRIL.
DVD Recording
A DVD is being commissioned to record as much as possible of the Parade, the Reception and interviews with Members. It is envisaged that the DVD will be made available between 3 to 4 weeks after the event at a cost of £10 each. Copies will be made available for sale through the Museum and by direct mail from the Chairman. When mailed to UK addresses an additional £1.50 per disk, postage and packing, will be required. P&P costs for other addresses will be calculated at the time. Similarly, the price of video tapes will be calculated when numbers are known.
It would be very helpful if an indication could be given as to the number of disks/tapes required. Obviously, small quantities will cost more to produce than larger batches. Please contact me by: telephone (01702) 341968, fax (01702) 432440 or, preferably, by email thipthorpe@btconnect.com
to give an indication of future orders. These indications will not be binding but will help us in assessing the likely demand for disks & tapes.
Finally,
could I ask Members who receive this Update direct by email, or read it on the Noticeboard, to pass on the information to those Members who are not connected to the Internet or who may not have seen it. It is very important for the “Day Trippers” to contact Jim Gitsham as early as possible.

Oswald Arthur Gregory C/JX 301244, died on 5 Feb 05, aged 82.
He joined HMS Ganges on 15 Sep '41 (not 22 Sep '41 as stated in membership list) and was trained there until 20 Nov '41 before being drafted to HMS Pembroke to join minesweepers.
He served until 8 July '46 leaving the Navy as a Leading Seaman when he was discharged to the Reserve Fleet until 1956.
His ashes are to be scattered, at his request, in Scotland where he met his wife during the war.
His daughter has asked in a Notice prepared for relatives, friends and the local newspaper that donations be made to HMS Ganges and I have suggested that these go to the Museum c/o David Layte (address etc.) as Chairman of Trustees.
I said I would pass on her message to all concerned and invite the Webmaster to put an entry on the website and the Editor of the Gazette to include his details in the Summer Gazette. She would like to have a copy of the Gazette with his details in the CTB section, sent to her please.
I also told her that a Remembrance Book was in the course of being compiled but would take some time as we had to go back to the founding of the Association in 1981 to collect all the names.

Leslie Duckworth C/JX408087
Dear Sirs,
I wonder if you can help me. I am trying to find any information on my father in law Leslie Duckworth who served at HMS Ganges in 1943.
I found a photograph on your site and thought I'd spotted him but it's the 34 mess photo from 1943 but when I checked all the signatures he wasn't there.
Would there have been other messes!
Unfortunately he passed away in 1992, my mother in law has his linen papers but I can't find anything on the internet about him.
His number was C/JX408087 and his date of birth was 19th December 1924.
I'd really appreciate any help you might be able to give me, it would make my husbands family's year to see something about him in the Navy.
Many thanks for any help you could give me
Regards

PJM Medal
I must agree with George Fleming's remarks regarding the PJM Medal being awarded by the Malaysian Government.
There would be many members of our organisation who would be eligible for this medal through service during the Indonesian confrontation and I feel it would be appropriate for our organisation to support the lobbying efforts being made by other organisations.
In contrast the Australian Defence Department is facilitating the awarding of this medal even though it is not an official Australian decoration.
This reflects very much the difference in attitudes towards ex servicemen between the two countries.
Australians are proud of their ex sevicemen and the contribution they have made in numerous campaigns, which can be so clearly seen on Anzac day.
Commonwealth veterans can also receive a service pension at age 60 if they meet the criteria of having faced hostilities and meet residential requirements.
So why is the UK government so reticent about this generous offer by the Malaysians, what are the politics of it? or is it just another denial by the current Labour (Christian Democrat) government of our history and contribution by many who did their duty.
As an organisation let us ask the questions.

Norman Millen
 |
Hi! Shipmates,
A request from Canada. I am an ex St Vincent "boy" so I hope you don't hold that against me and can help.
My younger brother Norman Millen was only in the RN for six months, the entire time of which was at HMS Ganges before he got himself booted out,
a stupid thing to do and which now in latter years he bitterly regrets. He cannot remember his class, any of his class mates and has no pictures except the one I attach.
I figure he would have been in HMS Ganges late 1961, early '62, if any of your members recognize him and can supply any stories, pictures, class number etc it would be much appreciated.
Incidentally I do my bit to help the local Ganges Division here by advertising their present in Canada and on the pages there are links to other chapters and to the HMS Ganges Association main site at <http://www.candoo.com/ncot/nuganges.htm>
Many thanks for any assistance.

Hi Clive,
I thought that it might be of interest to members, that the Adult Learning Inspectorate's Report 'Safer training: Managing risks to the welfare of recruits in the British armed services' recently reported in the press, is available online, both in summary and the complete report itself.
Members interested in seeing what belated attempts are being made to tackle mistreatment of recruits will find this report interesting. Overall, basic training at HMS Raleigh gets a good report (see pp56+57).
Those without internet access or who wish to obtain a hard copy of the publication, can do so by contacting The Stationery Office, where the Report is available at a cost of £15.
