Closure of HMS Ganges Association Website

Gentlemen
This is to inform you that over the next 48 hours I will be closing down the HMS Ganges Association website and removing it from the world wide web.
The website has been in existence for 10 years and has been a challenging, time consuming but mostly enjoyable experience.
Regrettably after attending the 2007 Reunion and AGM I have come to the conclusion that I can no longer support or belong to this association.
I have had some concerns over the recent years regarding the management of the association and other associated concerns such as the 'Slop Room' 'Mast Fund' 'Museum' and the treatment of officers of the committee.
Combined with these concerns which may be due to misunderstandings or lack of communication I have to admit that not all association members or committee members are happy with the new internet technology and unfortunately due to ignorance or narrow vision have not been prepared to grasp the opportunities that this technology can provide.
Therefore I have decided to weigh and proceed to more user friendly ports.
I hope, nay I am sure, that someone else will take up the challenge and that a new HMS Ganges Association website will soon appear online.
Best Wishes
Clive

After an email message from the Membership Secretary and several other members, I have agreed to keep the website live until my return to the UK on the 2nd June to enable as many members as possible to be informed of the situation.

The Secretary's View

In September 2006, after reading items on the website, and the blank space for Association Secretary in the Gazette, I offered my services to the Chairman. He suggested I attend the Committee meeting of 1st October to observe and take a synopsis of notes to assist him. After that meeting I became Acting Secretary.

At the January Committee meeting it became apparent that the new Treasurer could not balance his accounts as he had no access or knowledge of the Reunion money and Mr. Doyle was requested to meet with the Treasurer to ensure all monies and records were under the remit of the Treasurer and the Association.

The next Committee meeting was in March 2007 and after repeated attempts by Mr. Parker to Mr. Doyle to bring all accounts under one roof, and questions by the Chairman, Committee and observers as to the amount, documentation, and whereabouts of monies not known to the Association (after all this was the Members money that the Committee was responsible for) Mr. Doyle's reply was only that it was safe. It was agreed Mr. Doyle should again transfer the money to the Treasurer by 2nd April. He did not.

At the AGM the Chairman and the Committee were bound by the Rules and the very nature of their role to ascertain why these funds, and all relevant receipts, record of transactions had still been retained by Mr. D. Doyle in a different account , the second signatory to which was not even a Committee Member.

Tony Thipthorpe did have a failing at the AGM and that was in attempting to get the truth across to the members, he laboured somewhat, causing it to extend the time factor of the debate. That I have to admit did not assist, and eventually caused the loss of control, but from the outset certain members were intent on shouting him down with ridiculous comments such as "witch hunt", "leave poor old Dickie alone" etc. The actual truth of the matter could not and was not going to be discussed as far as some members were concerned, much to the detriment of the Association. It was always going to be a downward spiral from then on with the floor turning into a veritable bear pit, and the meeting to chaos.

Finally, at no time throughout all the discussions at the various meetings has Mr. Doyle been accused of any fraudulence, all the Chairman and Committee ever wanted was ALL Association money (the members money) under one umbrella, what on earth was wrong with that and why couldn't Mr. Doyle comply

I took the Secretary's position for the Association's benefit, not mine, not the Chairman's, no one - just the members.

As has been recorded by other members, I too had some choice words directed at me by the new Chairman, but chose to ignore them and I will not be intimidated.

A further point I would like to make is that none of the officers or Committee Members have tendered their resignations but are anxious to make every effort to continue their responsibilities at this point in time.

Dennis Guthrie AB PJ930680 Anson 23 Mess 1953
Sad to relate the passing of my old shipmate Dennis Guthrie on 22/4/07 after a short illness at Carshalton, Surrey.
Dennis and I joined Ganges the same day 13/10/53 and ended up in the same Division (Anson), mess (23), and class as well.
Dennis was born in Elgin but had lived in Carshalton for many years.
One job he had was to be chauffeur to the Archbishop of Canterbury.
He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. We attended reunions together and really enjoyed ourselves.
Survived by his widow Iris and daughter Mandy.
Rest in peace old mate.
