Guzz Weekend 2008
Stop Press (31 October 2007) - Sorry to say I have just been informed that the Kistor Hotel has only 4 rooms left and by the time the Advert goes out in the Gazette they may well be gone
and there is no overflow. Their other hotel The Inglewood just over the road has Coach Parties booked in but it may be worth getting your name down on a cancellation list.
(It must be the £79 for 3 nights that did it) I hope to run it again 2009 and could book both hotels if next year works out well. If you wish to book into any other hotel and just come along to join in the fun and lamp swinging you are more than welcome

West Country Gunners Branch Dinner 30 Nov |
Dear all,
The dinner is fast approaching, 1 month today in fact.
Please accept this email as a gentle reminder if you would like to attend and haven't booked your seat, please send the attached proforma to me ASAP as the final list has to be submitted into Raleigh's mess shortly.
Many thanks to everyone who's been in touch about the dinner, whether able to attend or not, your comments and feedback are always valuable. As ever, it's easier to send out group emails as opposed to individual ones so sorry if you've already sent in your chits and keep getting emails off me!
I hope to hear from those who are still getting round to it in the near future.
Aye,
Ty Baker <baker@tesco.net>

CROSSED THE BAR
It is with deep regret, that I inform members of the death of Colin Swift. Colin joined Ganges in1951, and trained in comms. In recent years he has suffered with various illnesses. Sadly this last one took its toll and Colin died on Sunday 2nd September. He leaves his loving wife, Dianne.
He was a long standing member of Beeston Division. May he find a safe Anchorage.

POSTAL VOTING
Following the smooth running of the voting at the EGM dare I suggest that it was possibly down to the high level of postal voting and that it may well be useful if all AGM voting was fully postal. Some may say that all postal voting would stifle debate but if all members are in receipt of the rationale behind any proposition and candidates CV'S for a position on the committee there should be no problem. The main advantage that I see is that it will give more time at AGM for reports and general discussion and cut out a load of the waffle from lower deck lawyers thus reducing the chances of a repeat of AGM 2007. Then, we can complete the AGM on time and get on with the real business of re-union, enjoying each others company over a tot and a yarn.
If anyone else has any constructive ideas on the issues surrounding voting it would be nice to hear them and who knows we may end up getting it right. I am more than happy to collate any suggestions (as long as they are not offensive ) if you would like to e-mail them to me.

H.M.S. Ganges Association,
Committee Meeting Minutes
Sunday 9th September 2007:
16. Any Other Business.
16.2 "The Mylor Memorial was badly neglected".
On Friday 5th October a working party from the Cornwall Division
gathered at the Mylor Memorial site;
a photograph was taken before any type of work commenced.
Some fallen leaves were swept from the memorial area,
and on completion another photograph was taken.
The Mylor Memorial has not been neglected since it was originally rescued from the undergrowth and restored by the Solent Division; it will continue to be maintained by ourselves with the kind assistance of our neighbouring Devonport Division as long as we are able to do so.

Missing HMS Ganges Magazines
The Museum would dearly like to aquire the following HMS Ganges Magazines
Xmas 1933
Xmas 1934
Summer 1951
Xmas 1955
Summer 1956
Xmas 1956
Summer 1959
Xmas 1961
Xmas 1966
Summer 1967
There is a wealth of information in these old magazines, every officer, instructor and most badge boys are named.
So they are most important to our records and so very helpful to visitors and researchers.

Many Thanks

Field Gun Competition Medal 1927
 |
Greetings, and thank you for an amazing and infomative wesite concerning HMS Ganges. I found a forum member's photo (Jim Lane) who was apparently a member of a field gun crew in 1965.
I wrote him at the email link provided but the email address is apparently not active. My note is as below, and I would be grateful for any information about the attached medal and its inscriptions.
Thank you so much! I Will also write the museum and a couple of the other members who were on field gun crews.

Dear Mr. Lane,
Hope you don't mind my writing with regard to the attached photo. I did a little Internet search and discovered that you were a member of a field gun crew at HMS Ganges. I thought perhaps you could help me decipher this memento of Ganges in the 1920's.
My assumption is that it was an award for the runners up in a field gun competition in 1927, and that the 4th Division was one of many units among the boys at Ganges. I would be most grateful for any information you might share about this medal and its inscriptions, and the 4th Division.
I should add that I am preparing an article about Royal Tournament medals, and of course the RN field gun competition is so very well known. But was a similar field gun competition a standard part of naval training, or perhaps an athletic elective in which boys could compete (perhaps like the cricket team or football team)?
Thank you in advance for your kind assistance.

George Athroll is kindly checking the museum to see if he can find any reference to the medal and any other help or information would be very much appreciated by Nick who I presume is purchasing the item which is at present for sale on E-Bay - Webmaster.

John Henry Morris
I am researching the life of my Father who "Crossed the Bar" in 1975 and have gleaned some information from The Royal Hospital School where he was a pupil from 1930 to 1935.
To my surprise and delight the RHS informed me that he left them to join Ganges as a boy 2nd class on 14th January 1935. As an ex-Ganges boy myself (52 Recruitment 1962 Grenville 25 Mess) I was shocked to hear this news because he had never told us of his Naval connection and in fact served from 1938 to 1946 in the Army. Can any of the Members remember John Henry Morris from 1935? He came from Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire and any news of his Naval Service would be most welcome. Unfortunately we do not have his Official Number so cannot approach the records office at Kew.
Kind regards,
Josh Morris <joshmorris0511@gmail.com>
